Struggling to stay motivated with your workout routine? Exercise may be an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but it isn’t always an enjoyable one. Enjoy the health and mental wellness benefits while giving your routine a little extra boost with cannabis.

Benefits of Cannabis in Your Workout Routine

While there is a limited amount of scientific studies and literature about the benefits of cannabis in an exercise setting, the World Anti-Doping Agency actually considers it a performance-enhancing drug. It is known to “improve oxygenation and decrease anxiety.”

In this case, THC and CBD are both useful. THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, can mimic the “runner’s high” that many seek out. The term “runner’s high” is actually derived from the chemical similarities to THC produced in the body with physical activity. This can be an added benefit for those looking to include cannabis before their workout.

The nonpsychoactive ingredient in cannabis, CBD, can also have benefits. and CBD can help reduce anxiety as well as inflammation. Studies have shown that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that can aid in post-workout recovery.

Cannabis doesn’t have to be ingested to be included in your workout routine. It can easily be applied topically to help with inflammation, soreness, or muscle pain.

Add a little joy to your workout and get even more motivated. The majority of those surveyed by the University of Colorado Boulder claimed that workouts were more fun with cannabis.

Start Low, Go Slow

The “start low and go slow” approach to cannabis is highly recommended. There is also microdosing, which is a “start low, stay low” approach. Either way, beginning with a lower dosage and working your way up is ideal. Not only do you not know how your body will react, you risk injuring yourself if your dosage is too high and you become too intoxicated.

Start with a small dose. Whether you’re choosing to smoke, enjoy some edibles, or topically apply CBD, you’ll want to learn the right dosage for you. Once you know how your body reacts during and after exercise, you can begin to increase the dosage.

It is recommended that you start with a low dose and participate in a less strenuous activity the first time.

Cannabis Before or After

That same study conducted by UC Boulder surveyed approximately 600 people who use marijuana before or after their workout. There are benefits to both and when you choose to include cannabis in your routine is entirely up to you.

It should be noted, though, that if you choose to smoke prior to a workout you should do so at least an hour prior to beginning. The effects on your body within the first hour of smoking can put your heart at risk.

Cannabis can be an excellent addition to any workout routine. More fun, more recovery, and less anxiety sounds like a great time. Just remember to be smart and consult a doctor first. Chat with one of Heally’s medical cannabis partners today. Sign up here
