How To Get Your Missouri Medical Marijuana Certification

In this article, we cover all the steps you need to take to become medical cannabis certified in the state of Missouri.

In late 2018, Missourians overwhelmingly voted to pass Amendment 2, which legalized medical cannabis in the Show-Me State. Although dispensaries in Missouri won’t open until 2020, thousands of applications for medical cannabis cards have already been approved.

Determining if a Patient Is Qualified

Missouri Residency and Age Requirements

First, in order to apply for a medical cannabis card, you must be considered a Missouri resident and be at least 18 years of age. However, if a patient is under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian can submit a consent form and apply for a Caregiver card instead.

Diagnosis of a Qualifying Condition

Next, a licensed doctor must diagnose you with a “qualifying condition”.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS), the conditions which qualify you for a medical cannabis card include:

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Severe migraines
  • Certain chronic medical conditions that cause severe pain
  • Debilitating psychiatric disorders, such as PTSD
  • HIV/AIDS
  • A terminal illness
  • Other conditions as prescribed by a physician

However, even if you don’t see your condition on this list, don’t lose hope yet. Any condition which is chronic, debilitating, or normally treated with prescription medication that could lead to dependence, also qualifies.

After receiving a diagnosis for one of the above conditions, you will need to take your paperwork to a physician. This physician should be willing to write you a recommendation for medical cannabis use. He/she may or may not be the same doctor that diagnosed you.

How to Get a Missouri Medical Marijuana Card: 3 Steps

Step 1: Find a Doctor

Unfortunately, not all doctors are willing to recommend medical cannabis. Sometimes, the physician who diagnosed you with a qualifying condition may be unwilling to prescribe cannabis. This means you may need to find another doctor who is willing to help you get your certification.

Luckily, Heally makes it easy to get your Missouri medical marijuana card online.

After scheduling an appointment, you are ready for your consultation.

During the consultation, your physician will discuss with you:

  1. How cannabis can relieve your symptoms.
  2. Any side effects you may experience.
  3. The type of cannabis, dosage, and methods that are best for you.

The consultation is the perfect time to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about cannabis and CBD use.

Afterward, your doctor will complete a physician certification for medical cannabis form for you to take as part of your application process.

Step 3: Apply Online through MDHSS

Once you have your certification form completed by a doctor, you can apply for your medical cannabis card.

Please note that your physician certification must be less than 30 days old by the time that you apply.

Additionally, all applications must be submitted through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ online registry.

When, Where, and How Can I Buy Missouri Medical Cannabis?

Missouri is already granting medical marijuana cards, but cannabis is not yet for sale in the state. Unfortunately, the state has yet to grant any licenses for those who want to grow, manufacture, or sell medical cannabis. However, they did begin vetting applications in early August 2019. The state will have until the end of the year to grant a total of 338 licenses for medical marijuana facilities.

These facilities will include cultivation facilities, processing facilities, and dispensaries.

So where will the actual dispensaries be located? Each of Missouri’s eight congressional districts will grant 24 licenses. Curious about exact location? Missouri has released a list of prospective dispensaries here.

There is no official date for when medical marijuana sales will begin, but dispensaries will not be granted licenses until 2020. Once the dispensaries are open, patients will be able to purchase up to four ounces of dried, unprocessed cannabis in a 30-day period.

Can You Grow Your Own Cannabis?

Missouri is also granting patient cultivation cards. The cultivation cards allow patients to grow up to six cannabis plants. Patients must apply for this license, as well as the medical cannabis card, and pay the $100 fee.

What About CBD?

Hemp-derived CBD products are legal nationwide and can be purchased from out-of-state vendors. Missourians don’t need a medical marijuana card to buy these non-THC containing products. CBD is completely non-intoxicating and supports health and wellness.
